THE NEI_WAN BRANCH INDEX

Movies
Departing Hsin-chu northwards for Nei-wan on 20 Nov 2005. We weave through the complex of lines at the station throat and onto the single line, passing two EMUs heading south and into a quick rain shower. (2 min 49 sec)

Fortunately, the rain had stopped by the time of our arrival at the busy station and block post of Chu-tung. Here we took the  left hand loop into the platform to cross the westbound working to Hsin-chu, just visible in the distance as we come to a stand. (1 min 42 sec)

The mountains start to close in as we approach Chiu-tsou-tou over one of the two long viaducts that required to be rebuilt after the 9/21 earthquake in 1999.As we arrive at the station and block post look out for the beautiful lower quadrant semaphore signals, working examples now being increasingly rare in Taiwan. This is also the source of originating cement traffic from the factory complex to the left...........    (2 min 17 sec)

...unlike the former sidings at Ho-sing which can be seen here to the left as we depart the station and climb on a right hand curve to the south and into the tunnel. Although these have been disconnected and the large fan of sidings together with the aerial cableway dismantled, the pointwork at the station throat and the associated semaphore signals have been preserved. Arriving at the branch terminus at Nei-wan on 20 Nov 2005. Note the rockfall shelter (it's obviously OK to squash cars but not trains - a noble sentiment providing it isn't my car of course!!). This is the home to one of the most pettily officious persons I have met in the form of a "whistleman" (All expats will understand what I mean here), who rudely ushered everyone off the platform instantly on arrival without a single word and into the sweaty booking hall whilst the air-conditioned train sat in the platform for 20 minutes, allowing us back on board the empty train 2 minutes before departure. (2 min 03 sec)
