A northbound DMU arrives at Lu-yeh on 3rd April 2005. The "Hua-dong" (Hua-lien to Tai-dong) line was originally 2'-6" gauge and totally isolated from the rest of the TRA network by very mountainous barriers to the north and south requiring some impressive civil engineering in the construction first of the North Link (Su-ao to Hua-lien) and then the South Link (Fang-liao to Tai-dong). The line follows the narrow gauge alignment for the most part, although some major realignments were made and tunnels built under the rivers, as shown on the maps. The line, which follows the eastern rift valley, is single track with passing loops, as at lu-yeh as shown here. A northbound express hauled by A1A-A1A diesel-electric loco R134 arrives at Shou-fen 7th October 2006. The tortuous nature of the route is illustrated well by the telephoto lens here. This was the Taiwan National Day public holiday and the train was packed solid. I have lost my notes of the day so I cannot identify any of the trains here - the timetable must have been changed as nothing therein now seems to fit the traffic pattern. This shot was late morning. A southbound express Wan-rung, hauled by R166 at lunchtime on the 7th October 2006. This train stopped to pass a northbound non-stop DMU that hurtled though before I could set the camera up. As stated above, this was a holiday, hence the background Karaoke "singing" (I use the term advisedly - I am sure he was enjoying himself. Wonderful stuff this Taiwan Beer!!). The area to the left of the train was the exchange sidings for the former 2'-6" gauge Lin-tien-shan Forestry Railway which curved away in a north westerly direction, following the curved fence line. The above train leaves Wan-rung on 7th October 2006 and, rejoining the single line, continues south towards Tai-dong. The "Singer" has either thankfully passed out or has decided he has inflicted enough misery on the poor citizens of Wan-rung. (1 min 06 sec)
